Hiv infected patients in intensive care: an observational study of admissions between 1996-2006 and 2007-2014

چکیده
Introduction With the advent of widely available HIV testing and the introduction of antiretroviral agents, life expectancy of HIV infected patients has increased. Historically patients with HIV requiring ITU admission had a poor outcome, with mortality up to 70% however in recent years ITU mortality rates have fallen ([1]). An aging population presenting with both HIV complications and non-HIV related disease combined with improved survival rates has implications for ITU management and prognostication.

Survival of HIV-infected patients in the intensive care unit in the era of highly active antiretroviral therapy.
BACKGROUND Several studies have described improved outcomes for HIV-infected patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) since the introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). A study was undertaken to examine the outcome from the ICU for HIV-infected patients and to identify prognostic factors. METHODS A retrospective study of HIV-infected adults admitted to a univers...

OBJECTIVES To estimate trends in infection/colonisation with meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in an intensive care unit (ICU). DESIGN Observational study of results of ICU admission and weekly screens for MRSA. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS All ICU admissions in 2001-2012. INTERVENTIONS ICU admissions were screened for MRSA throughout. In late 2006, screening was extended to t...
متن کاملCosts of admission for paediatric pneumonia in a setting of human immunodeficiency virus infection.
BACKGROUND Pneumonia in South African children remains a major public health concern. The costs of hospital admission for pneumonia should be determined, especially where human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is common. OBJECTIVE To determine the hospital costs of children (HIV-infected vs. non-HIV-infected) admitted for the management of pneumonia and compare them in the public and fe...
متن کاملWhat impact did a Paediatric Early Warning system have on emergency admissions to the paediatric intensive care unit? An observational cohort study.
UNLABELLED The ideology underpinning Paediatric Early Warning systems (PEWs) is that earlier recognition of deteriorating in-patients would improve clinical outcomes. OBJECTIVE To explore how the introduction of PEWs at a tertiary children's hospital affects emergency admissions to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and the impact on service delivery. To compare 'in-house' emergency ad...
متن کاملImmune Response to Standard Hepatitis B Vaccination in HIV-Infected Patients
Background: Due to their similar routes of transmission, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis B virus (HBV) co-infection occurs considerably. HBV infection progresses more rapidly in HIV-infected patients. Therefore, HBV vaccination of all non-immune HIV infected patients is recommended. On the other hand, HIV-infected subjects have suboptimal responses to HBV vaccine. In this study...
